Is this course right for me?
The Yorkshire Blue Badge Tourist Guide Training Course is designed for people who are passionate about Yorkshire and want to share that enthusiasm with others. Ask yourself these five questions:
1. Do I enjoy meeting people and sharing stories?
Blue Badge Guides welcome visitors from around the world. If you enjoy communicating, entertaining and helping others discover new places, you’ll already possess one of the most important qualities of a successful guide.
2. Am I curious and willing to keep learning?
You don’t need to be an expert before you apply. What matters is an enthusiasm for Yorkshire’s history, heritage, landscapes and culture, together with a willingness to research, study and continue learning throughout your career.
3. Can I commit the time?
The course is academically demanding and professionally rewarding. Alongside taught sessions, you should expect to devote around 5–10 hours each week to private study, research and preparing practical assignments.
4. Could I build a freelance business?
Most Blue Badge Guides are self-employed. As well as developing excellent guiding skills, you’ll learn how to market yourself, build professional networks and create memorable experiences that visitors will recommend and return for.
5. Do I want to become an ambassador for Yorkshire?
We’re looking for welcoming, professional and enthusiastic people from North, South, East and West Yorkshire, as well as applicants with foreign language skills. If you want to inspire visitors and represent Yorkshire with pride, this course could be the start of an exciting and rewarding career.
Ready to apply?
If you answered yes to all five questions above, we believe you have many of the qualities we’re looking for in a future Yorkshire Blue Badge Guide. If you can picture yourself sharing Yorkshire’s history, stories and landscapes with visitors from around the world, we’d encourage you to submit an application.
Please ensure you have read through the prospectus in full before applying.
Because it forms an important part of the selection process, the application form asks you to tell us about your experience, interests and motivation in some detail.
It should take around 30 – 40 minutes to complete but you don’t have to finish it in one session, you can save your progress at the end of each section and return whenever it’s convenient to continue where you left off.
When you’re ready, simply start completing the form below. We look forward to receiving your application.
